The Secret to Younger Skin: Red Light Therapy

Red light Therapy May Be The Secret to Removing Skin Imperfections

With the flick of a switch, a dose of red light is said to relieve your skin from everything from acne, to wrinkles and stretch marks at the cellular level. No harsh chemicals, no down time. But as with most magical-sounding cure-alls, you have to wonder: Is it too good to be true?

There is a lot to get excited about, according to experts, but red light treatments isn’t totally free of controversy, either. Here’s how red light therapy works, and which of its claims are legit and which remain a bit off.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy (RLT) works by using safe, concentrated wavelengths of natural light into your skin where it’s absorbed by the cells. The absorption of these precise wavelengths helps stimulate collagen production, elastin and fibroblasts while enhancing the ATP energy source for every cell in the body.
Sound confusing? In simpler terms, when your skin cells are introduced to the red light wavelengths, it kick-starts a regeneration process helping your skin to feel and look younger, diminish scarring and even enhanced muscle repair.
As more evidence is proving and confirming the benefits stated of RTL, it’s becoming more and more widely accepted. Local spas, dermatologists and even gyms are now offering some form of RLT. You can also these treatments at home with a handheld red light wand device for more targeted treatments if you don’t want to go all in on a gym membership or RLT bed.

Not All Red Lights Are The Same

In order to soak up all the goodness and benefits of using RLT, you need to make sure you are using a device that is designed for red light therapy since not just any red light will work. There are two red light wavelengths in particular (660 nanometers & 850 nanometers) that the skin responds to the best.
The 660 nanometers is used for cosmetic treatments such as signs of aging since its absorbed by the skin quicker. The 850 nanometer wavelength penetrates deeper to help with muscle recovery and joint pain.
In other words, make sure the red light device you decide to go with mentions the 660nm wavelength in their specifications.

What Does Red Light Treat?

Red Light Therapy Before and After
Red light therapy before and after

Science has shown red light therapy can help heal many pains and skin imperfections and also helps with texture, tone, and pore size.
Using RLT properly can help with:

  • Crow’s Feet

  • Wrinkles and skin damage

  • Stretch Marks

  • Dark Spots

  • Anti-Aging

  • Hair Loss

One study found that both men and women with a genetic disorder that causes hair loss used an at-home RLT device for 24 weeks and experienced thicker hair. Others who used a fake RLT device did not get the same results. Red light energy may also help with healing wounds and mitigating the appearance of scars and acne while seeing improved skin complexion.

How Long Does A Red Light Device Take to Work?

The amount of time it takes to start seeing results depends on a couple of things – consistency of usage and severity of your skin. You can use a red light wand once or twice a day or every other day from 3 to 10 minutes as your schedule allows. Using it regularly is the key to seeing results. You can start to see minor results rather quickly (especially when used with a serum) but to see the full effects expect anywhere from three to six months. After that, you will want to use the device only for maintenance.
Once you have your red light device, track your results by taking “before and “after” photos and take more pictures every other day or week in the same position. Always follow the directions on your device for the best results. You can also use a collagen serum in combination with the RLT device to start seeing results quicker.

Best Red Light Therapy Devices for Skincare

With so many RLT devices on the market, it can be hard to distinguish a real RLT wand from a fake one. Finding the right device depends on its size, specs and application.
When shopping for a red light device (such as a wand) make sure it has the following specifications:

      Red Light Wavelength: 660nm
      Certifications: OE, RoHS

For portable devices (like the Grava-Lift) make sure it can be easily stored in a purse and is rechargeable for those on-the-go treatments and durable – preferably made out of aluminum alloy.
Red light therapy has been scientifically proven to help with the issues listed above — everything from anti-aging to pain relief, to oral health. It is a safe and natural treatment, it's easy and convenient, making it simple to implement in your skincare routine. Everyone who wants to improve their skin's appearance and prolong their skins youthful appearance should have one.
